What is CBRS?

Tampa, Florida — September 14, 2021 — As the telecom industry grows and matures, Learning Alliance Corporation must update its training programs to include these new developments. One of these new updates is an increased focus on CBRS and the CPI certification, but what is CBRS? Citizens Broadband Radio Service or CBRS is the 150 MHz of spectrum in the 3550 MHz to 3700 MHz range (3.5 GHz to 3.7 GHz). When the FCC acknowledged CBRS’s potential, they began efforts to open the technology for unlicensed use.

In order to meet the FCC Part 96 rules , technicians who work with CBRS technologies must be trained and certified. This certification is called the Certified Professional Installer or CPI. The CPI certification provides an industry baseline for the implementation of CBRS. This exhaustive course covers a wide range of topics including: CBRS terminology and concepts, the responsibilities of a CPI, CBRS installation, the Spectrum Access System (SAS), and CBRS troubleshooting.

According to NORWEST, CBRS brings new opportunities such as “network-scheduled client access, interference-resistant qualities, uninterrupted roaming, and more than 5 to 10 times greater coverage indoors and out with always-on data encryption and remarkable power management.”

Because it can be used in an unlicensed fashion, CBRS now gives organizations the ability to both own and operate their own private LTE/5G mobile networks without carrier contracts.

There are currently thousands of telecom job openings in the US and 5G expansion is expected to create 300,000 manufacturing jobsin the U.S. and up to 22 million jobs globally by 2035.  With CBRS allowing individuals to operate private LTE/5G mobile networks, one can assume that it has the potential for rapid growth.

LAC’s Director of Training, Derrick Francis said, “I believe CBRS will create many new job opportunities for our students as they will be receiving cutting edge training and certifications to improve the quality of broadband access across many different residential and commercial applications.”.

Learning Alliance Corporation and Federated Wireless recently announced a partnership through which the two companies will work to issue more than 2,000 CPI certificates over the next two years. This partnership will greatly expand the number of technicians available nationally. The program is designed to accelerate expansion of this low-cost option to deliver high speed broadband in rural and underserved communities who might otherwise have limited access to the Internet. To learn more about LAC’s and Federated Wireless’s partnership, click here.
